freight yard warehouse becomes cultural centre

Hanzas Perons

In the New Hanza area of Riga, a former freight depot has been converted into an impressive concert hall – Hanzas Perons. With more than 100 years of history behind it, the building combines historical architecture and modern design. Hanzas Perons has established itself as a central meeting place in Riga, providing a platform for culture, art and music. Under the direction of Sudraba Arhitektūra and Reinis Liepins, the industrial heritage was preserved and expanded with modern elements, such as a glass façade and a RHEINZINK roof.

Riga's industrial past as a foundation

The capital of Latvia, Riga, experienced an industrial boom before the First World War, which made the city one of the most important centres of trade and industry in the Baltic region. The historical legacy of this period still characterises the cityscape today. Numerous brick buildings, including factories and apartment blocks, are a defining feature of Riga's identity. The freight yard was a central logistics hub with several warehouses, of which only one survived – the present-day Hanzas Perons.

Architectural challenges and bold solutions

The old warehouse was saved due to its historical significance, but technical inspections showed that the original masonry and roof did not comply with today's building regulations. The architects came up with a creative solution: instead of reinforcing the existing structure from the inside, they created a new load-bearing structure made of steel and glass that envelops the building like a cloak. This innovative approach made it possible to preserve the historical substance while at the same time meeting modern requirements.

A combination of sustainability and aesthetics

The choice of materials for the roof played a central role in the renovation. The sustainable RHEINZINK prePATINA ECO ZINC in the blue-grey surface quality was used here. The pre-weathered surface ensures an even blue-grey appearance, which nevertheless still allows the natural patina process to continue. This special material is not only visually appealing, but also extremely durable and low-maintenance. The use of prePATINA ECO ZINC emphasises the forward-looking design of Hanzas Perons as a sustainable structure.
